Bringing home a new puppy is exciting! Here’s what to expect at their first vet visit and how to set them up for a healthy life.

The First Vet Visit

We recommend bringing your new puppy in within the first week of arriving home. The first visit includes a thorough physical exam, initial vaccinations, a parasite check, and microchipping if not already done.

Vaccination Schedule

Puppies need a series of vaccinations starting at 6–8 weeks of age, with boosters every 3–4 weeks until they’re 16 weeks old. Core vaccines protect against parvovirus, distemper, hepatitis, and kennel cough.

Desexing

We generally recommend desexing at around 6 months of age, though this can vary by breed. Desexing reduces the risk of certain cancers and behavioural issues, and helps control the pet population.

Nutrition

Feed a high-quality puppy food appropriate for your puppy’s expected adult size. Large breed puppies have different nutritional needs than small breeds. Ask us for personalised recommendations.

Socialisation & Training

The critical socialisation window is between 3 and 14 weeks of age. Expose your puppy to different people, animals, sounds, and environments in a positive way. Puppy school is a great investment.
